Yesterday was a day off from writing for me. I was busy celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with my family. However I did decide to check out MLB.com just in case there was any breaking news involving the Braves. Yes there was.
The Atlanta Braves signed utility player Sean Rodriguez to a two year deal, pending a physical. Rodriguez played for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. He batted .270 with 18 home runs and and an On Base Percentage of 859. Rodriguez can play 7 different positions. He can fill in at 1B and Right Field where he played primarily in Pittsburgh. The signing of Rodriguez could possibly end the hopes of Braves fans who might have wanted to sign fan favorite Jeff Francour.
John Hart and John Coppollo caught me totally off guard with this signing. That is what the Braves are famous for, they slip under the radar and sign players who do not necessarily make headlines. This signing is a great move for the Braves. Although I would love watching Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis player every single game, that isn’t very realistic. During a 162 regular season game, players all deserve an occasional day off. Plus this will give Brian Snitker another Designator Hitter option off the bench. The Braves will certainly sign more players to their rooster before Spring training training begins in March, but adding more players to the roster is always fun. The Winter meetings begin December 4th in Maryland and hopefully the Braves front office will have more surprises for our Braves family.GO BRAVES!!!!!
