The Braves will not go gentle into the good night. Yesterday’s afternoon was exciting for the Braves as Braves president John Hart and general manager John Coppolella announced the Braves had made a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for 1st baseman Matt Adams. The Cardinals will get infielder Juan Yepez. Adams lost his position in St. Louis to Matt Carpenter and the Cardinals’ attempt to move Adams to other positions failed.
The Braves had signed free agent James Loney this week as a possible replacement for Freddie Freeman, however Matt Adams is already major league ready as Loney continues to play at AAA Gwinnett. John Coppolella said that it is possible Matt Adams can play Sunday as the Braves go for their 3rd straight victory over the Washington Nationals. Jace Peterson has been playing well at 1st base in Freeman absence but a veteran 1st baseman and one who hits with power is a welcomed addition to the Braves lineup.
Adams numbers are impressive batting.271 with 56 home runs and an on base percentage of.769. Again the Braves lost Freddie Freeman this past week when Freeman suffered a fracture to his left wrist in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Rather than the Braves shrugging their shoulders and playing the victim card, the Braves have won series against the Blue Jays and division rivals the Washington Nationals. Bartolo Colon pitched a good game yesterday and held the Nationals to 2 runs after Colon’s rare throwing error.
The Braves heard the announcement is yesterday’s game of the trade for Adams and decided to celebrate their new teammate with home runs and an offensive display. Matt Kemp, Tyler Flowers, and Braves 3rd baseman Rio Ruiz enjoyed his first major league home run off of Nationals starter Max Scherzer. There was a rain delay in Atlanta yesterday but rather than dampening the Braves offense the Braves were able to add more runs once they got to the Nationals bullpen. The Braves bullpen did another amazing job and shut down the Nationals from the 6th inning on.
Yesterday was a lot of fun for Braves fans on several fronts. The Braves are welcoming Matt Adams, Bartolo Colon pitched a marvelous game, and the Braves bats provided plenty of offense. Rio Ruiz is a great story and made his big league debut in 2016. He got his first big league hit in the 2016 season and as an encore he hit his first home run off the reigning Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. This game this afternoon will have the Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg throwing against Jamie Garcia of the Braves. Regardless of who wins today’s ball game, the happy memories of yesterday are likely to pour into SunTrust Park today. GO BRAVES!!!!!
