The Atlanta Braves finally hit the long ball last night. With the starting pitchers of Mike Foltynewicz of the Braves against Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals the game appeared to be a pitching matchup. Those ideas were quickly over in the first inning of the game. The Braves had homeruns from Nick Markakis and Matt Kemp. The Nationals responded with a lead off homerun from Trea Turner.
Mike Foltynewicz did not have his good stuff last night and that is understandable. The Nationals have one of the best offenses in baseball. Both ball teams came off disappointing weekend loses to the New York Mets for the Braves and the San Francisco Giants for the Nationals. With all the hits and runs scored last night it looks like both teams wanted to vent their frustrations on each other.
Matt Adams smashed 2 homeruns last night and the balls seemed to be flying out of the ballpark in Washington. A lot of critics of baseball may suggest there is very little action to keep people interested. Last night offered plenty of offense and excitement. The Braves and Nationals kept trading leads, but in the end the Braves took advantage of a weak Nationals bullpen. Tyler Flowers hit a 3 run homerun in the top of the 8th inning to give the Braves the lead and Jim Johnson got the save in the bottom of the 9th inning.
If tonight can be as exciting as last night’s game, it will be special for all baseball fans regardless of who you are cheering for. The back drop to last night was the MLB Draft on MLB Television. The previous button on my remote control enjoyed a good workout last night as the channel changed often. The Braves are definitely picking the right team to beat right now as they look to gain ground on the National League East division leading Washington Nationals. Even if the Braves can win this 3 game series before returning home to face the Miami Marlins, it would be an uplifting sign for Braves fans as we try and forget the weekend series with the Mets. GO BRAVES!!!!!
