Mike Foltynewicz takes a no hitter into the 9th inning, and the Braves pick up the win against the Athletics.

Whenever the Atlanta Braves are in need of a win or to start a new winning streak Mike Foltynewicz seems to be leading the way. Last night in Oakland, Foltynewicz took a no hitter into the bottom of the 9th inning before allowing a late homerun to end his bid for a no hitter and a shut out win. When Braves manager took Foltynewicz out of the game after throwing 119 pitches the fans in Oakland gave him a standing ovation.

The Oakland Athletics are very similar to the Braves as both teams play in very difficult divisions and neither team has the popularity of other teams in their respective divisions. Baseball fans are loyal to their hometown teams, but fans appreciate great baseball and Mike Foltynewicz was only 3 outs away from throwing a no hitter. Having growing up in Northern California myself, fans and people tend to be more laid back and they do not allow sports to run their lives.

The Braves did have a late inning rally and gave Mike Foltynewicz a little more of a cushion after only scoring 1 run in the previous 8 innings. Ender Inciatre lead off the 9th inning with a hit and later came around to score after Matt Kemp’s hit in the 9th inning. The Braves were without their 1st baseman Matt Adams who had fouled a ball off his foot in Thursday’s game in San Diego. The Braves catcher Tyler Flowers did return to the lineup after suffering an arm contusion earlier this week.

No hitters are very rare in baseball and the fact that Mike Foltynewicz was only 3 outs away from his first had to be a fantastic feeling for him and the Braves organization.  Braves closer Jim Johnson came into the game in the 9th inning and struck out the final 3 batters to pick up the save. The starting time for today’s game is 4:40pm which will Braves fans to watch their team after late starts during the Braves road trip. The Braves will send R.A. Dickey to the mound this afternoon as they go for back to back wins. Hats off to Mike Foltynewicz in his pitching performance. Well done indeed. GO BRAVES!!!!!
