The Atlanta Braves were embarrassed yesterday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Braves manager Brian Snitker wasted little time deciding what he thinks will improve his ball club. Pitcher Aaron Blair and shortstop Dansby Swanson were both designated for assignment and sent down to AAA Gwinnett. The Braves will likely call up the versatile player Micah Johnson from the minors to fill in the position left open with Dansby Swanson departure. Aaron Blair call up to the major league was short indeed. Blair was brought up to the Braves this weekend after the team traded Jamie Garcia to the Minnesota Twins.
Dansby Swanson struggles this year have been well documented and the Braves have decided that Swanson hitting and fielding will improve if he gets the opportunity to play every day. Currently Johan Camargo has seen more playing time in Atlanta as he continues to swing a hot bat in the Braves lineup. This move in no way suggest the Braves have given up on Dansby Swanson. He was the first pick in the 2015 draft for a reason. Major league pitchers may have found out that Dansby Swanson has a hard time hitting sliders and he continues to struggle with that pitch.
Micah Johnson is a good player and his ability to play at different positions makes him a good asset to the Braves bench. The Braves continue to juggle their lineup and defense. The Braves want a great offense on the field so much they have taken the risk of moving their Gold Glove 1st baseman Freddie Freeman to 3rd base which I have been against since the idea first came up. However since I’m not a coach or manager my opinions only matter to me. I do think the Braves sending down Dansby Swanson to the minors is a great move. If other Braves players are playing and hitting better you should lose your starting position.
The Braves will enjoy a much deserved day off today as the front office and managers try to make the Braves a more competitive team. The front office still needs to try and find a suitable starter for the vacated Jamie Garcia. Aaron Blair and Matt Wisler were not very impressive in their major league call ups so what the Braves General Manager John Coppolella decides to do before the trade deadline on July 31st will be interesting. I’d like to see the Braves make a go at Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray, but I am not involved in those decisions. The 2017 season is far from over and it will be fascinating to see what the Braves will do in their clubhouse for the next few months of the season. Enjoy the travel day Braves players and coaches. Things will get interesting. GO BRAVES!!!!!
