All good and bad things come to an end. The Atlanta Braves losing streak is officially over at 6 straight games, their longest of the 2017 season. The Los Angeles Dodgers winning streak ended at 9 straight games as they are looking to separate themselves from the rest of the National League West. On a side note that may have gone overlooked, the Braves did gain ground on the division leading Washington Nationals, but before you we bust out the champagne the Nationals still have a comfortable lead at the top of the National League East which now stands at 12 games.
The Braves losing streak pushed their standings down in the National League East where before their losing streak, the Braves were in second place in their division. Now the Braves have dropped to fourth place in the National League East. The Braves looked more like their old selves last night with good starting pitching from Julio Teheran who had to exit the game early with a leg strain. Teheran was making his pitches count and this was a see saw game with the Dodgers and Braves both enjoying the lead. Braves manager Brian Snitker is using his bullpen a bit differently and instead of bringing in the Braves closer Jim Johnson in the game in the 9th inning, the Braves brought in reliever Arodys Vizcaino.Vizcaino picked up the save as he continues to come back from the disabled list.
The Braves offense was impressive early on with Danny Santana smashing a 2 run homerun early in the game to give the Braves an early lead. Freddie Freeman was back to his old self with 2 singles, a stolen base, and an RBI. Freeman was trying to do a bit too much last night and scoring from 2nd base on Nick Markakis’ 1,999 career hit, but Freeman was trying to rally the Braves. That’s what leaders do, they are willing to take risks when logic says differently. Freeman was out by a mile trying to score, but the effort was appreciated by this Braves fan. The Braves are still juggling their lineup and looking for a better option at 3rd base and Brian Snitker is using a lot of different players to fill that role including using ALL Star first baseman Freddie Freeman in that role. Sean Rodriguez and Danny Santana are playing their best to fill that role as Adonis Garcia is still on the disabled list. The Braves used Brandon Phillips at 3rd base last night as rookie Ozzie Albies took the starting position at 2nd base.
The Braves inconsistent plays at 3rd base will be addressed in the off season and look for the Braves to sign a productive 3rd baseman as the Braves have used almost 20 different players at 3rd base since the retirement of Chipper Jones. The Braves do have some prospects in the minors, but the Braves are not looking to rush their rookies to the majors just to fill a void. Last night Braves president John Hart came to the announcers table with Joe Simpson and Chip Carey. Hart did reveal some of the thinking of the Braves front office for the 2017 season and beyond. The Braves are full of talent in the minors and at the major league level as well. The Braves have done what a lot of the other teams in baseball haven’t been able to do, they play well against the Dodgers and are at an impressive 3-3 record with them this season. The Braves will go for the series win tonight at SunTrust Park and Sean Newcomb will take the mound once again against the Dodgers. GO BRAVES!!!!!
