Sean Newcomb was one strike away from a no hitter, he does pick up the win against the Dodgers!

The Atlanta Braves needed several things to go right on their Sunday afternoon game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Braves fans got their wish and a bit more. Sean Newcomb was dominating on the mound. He took a perfect game into the 7th inning. Then he issued a walk to Yasiel Puig. Well that was fine I told myself Sean still has a no hit game going. Newcomb was 1 strike away from his no hitter game. Manny Machado hit a clean single into left field ruining Newcomb’s no hitter bid. That was fine, he still has his shut out game. Machado would come around and score in the 9th inning. Regardless of the very close pitching goals, Sean Newcomb gave 1 of his best pitching performances of his Major League career.

The Braves offense clicked as well. Nick Markakis hit the games only home run as he was crushing the ball all over SunTrust Park. Markakis was not the only Braves hitter to enjoy a fine day at the plate. Ender Inciarte went 2 for 4 in the game. Inciarte’s speed on the bases played a key role in scoring 1 of the Braves 4 runs. Freddie Freeman was 1 for 3 with a run scoring double. The afternoon game belonged to Nick Markakis though. He went 3 for 4 at the plate. He was only a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Markakis drove in 3 of the 4 runs for the Braves. Normally Nick Markakis would have been the celebrated Braves player yesterday, but Sean Newcomb was the Braves player that reporters wanted to interview on Sunday.

Yesterday’s game was the shot in the arm the Braves needed. Not only were the Braves very dominating at home taking the final game of the series with the Dodgers. The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Cincinnati Reds and the Braves moved up to only being 1.5 games out of first place in the National League East. The Washington Nationals needed to do well with the weekend series in Florida against the Marlins. The Nationals only managed 1 victory in their series. If the Braves want to distance themselves in the NL East, a long winning streak would be ideal. The Braves begin their series with the Florida Marlins tonight in Atlanta. The Marlins are a very good team right now and the Braves need to remained focused on every game. Hopefully the Braves will not allow their win over the Dodgers linger in their minds tonight. It is an exciting time in Atlanta and the Braves are hoping to headline every sport show highlights reel. That might be a bit far fetched, but maybe the Braves are as great as I want them to be. GO BRAVES!!
